Title
Roman armour hinge fragment
Description
English: A corroded fragment of a copper-alloy Roman lobate hinged fitting from Corbridge type lorica segmentata armour, dating to the first or second centuries AD. This artefact is formed of two flat plates which have broken short of the hinge component, but which are sub-rectangular at the main body before narrowing to then expand into trifoliate lobes. The incomplete body has two rivet holes, both empty, whilst a further three are situated on the lobes, two of which maintain copper-alloy rivets. The underside of one rivet holds corroded iron, which probably represents the remains of the lorica segmentata. This artefact has a broadly light green to brown corrosion patina, and can be compared with CAM-F90F22 and Appels and Laycock (2007: 57, figs. AA6.24-28, particularly AA6.27).
