Summary[edit]

Description

Marble Relief, from Argos, Greece

Jupiter (Zeus), as a swan, seduced Leda, who laid two eggs. In one were Castor and Pollux, patrons of Rome, and in the other was Helen of Troy. The swan bites the back of Leda's neck, as real mating swans do. Later versions of the scene, for example the painting by Rubens, shows a frontal, eroticised approach.
