Title
Roman Lorica Segmentata
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy Roman fitting from lorica segmentata armour. It comprises a rectangular plate with worn, rounded corners at one end and projecting rectangular arms at the other, which hold in place a separately cast cylindrical copper-alloy bar. Two separately cast copper-alloy rivets with round heads are present at the centre of the plate and have slightly flattened tips visible on he back face where there is extensive brown staining. The front face of the plate has traces of incised decoration comprising concentric grooves around each of the rivets as well as single transverse grooves forming a rectangular border. The entire object has a worn and corroded dark green patina with areas of active copper-alloy corrosive products particularly around the edges of the plate. It measures 15.77mm in width (at bar end, 12.83mm at attachment end), 26.86mm in length, 4.63mm in thickness, and weighs 4.27g.

This is part of a hinged strap fitting from Roman lorica segmentata armour with near identical parallels in terms of form and decorative elements published by Bishop and Coulston (1993: fig. 52 nos. 16, 22, 25, 27). It is of Roman date, probably belonging in the 1st to 2nd centuries AD.
