Roman Key Ring, 4th –earlier 5th-century.
Description
English: Roman ring-key. Very heavy hoop of flattened D-section (8.5 x 2.5mm), oval internal diameter 18 x 16mm, shorter at rights angles to ward. Below the ward a rectangular bezel-like panel (13 x 7mm) is decorated with double V-shaped grooves below a horizontal groove. The 7.5mm square ward., which sits on a narrow neck, is decorated with V-shaped nicks along the top edge & upper parts of the sides, & by a horizontal groove near the base. There is a U-shaped aperture with a broad groove in the centre of the base. A similar example was recovered from a 4th –earlier 5th-century grave at Colchester (Crummy 1983, 85, fig. 89 no. 2170).
