Title
English: Roman Coins
Description
English: A bronze coin of Caracalla, from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of Northamptonshire, sold separately and as Map 25 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The illustration is a reengraving of Figure 8 in Tabula I Nummi Romani from William Camden's Britannia, Vol. I, p. 98.

Obverse: M AVREL·ANTONINVS·PIVS·AVG BRIT [Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Pius Augustus Britannicus, Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus the Devout of British Fame]

Reverse: VICTORIA·P·M·TR·PXIIII·COS·III·P·P· [Victoria Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestas XIIII Consul III Pater Patriae, Victory Chief Pontiff 14th Year of Tribunician Power 3rd Time Consul Father of the Fatherland]

Camden's note mistakenly dates the coin to the year 214, stating "8. The 8th (which is Caracalla's, but is not put in its proper place) plainly shows by the numerals that he conquered the enemy in Britain in the year of our Lord 214. As also by the trophy, which Virgil in these verses has described more lively than the best engraver can possibly do.

"Ingentem quercum decisis undique ramis
Constituit tumulo, fulgentiaque induit arma
Mezenti ducis exuvias, tibi magne tropheum
Bellipotens: aptat roranteis sanguine cristas,
Telaque trunca viri.
And first he lopped an oak's great branches round,
The trunk he fastened in a rising ground.
And here he fixed the shining armor on,
The mighty spoil from proud Mezentius won.
The crest was placed above that dropped with blood,
A grateful trophy to the warlike God;
And shattered spears stuck round."

An example of an actual sestertius from the same year can be seen here, although the obverse inscription is placed differently.
