English: A silver miliarense of Magnus Maxumus (RIC IX Treveri 82), from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of Rutlandshire (now Rutland), sold separately and as Map 25 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The illustration is a reengraving of Figure 24 in Tabula II Nummi Romani from William Camden's Britannia, Vol. I, page 98.
Obverse: D N MAG·MAXIMVS·P·F·AVG [Dominus Noster Magnus Maximus Pius Felix Augustus, Our Lord the Devout and Fortunate Emperor Magnus Maximus] Reverse: VIRTVS EXERCITVS [Virtus Exercitus, Virtue or Manliness of the Army] and TRPS [Augustae Treverorum Pustulatum, Pure Silver Minted at Trier] Camden's note states "24, 25, 26. When Magnus Maximus was created Emperor by the army in Britain, as also his son Flavius Victor; this money was coined in compliment and honour to the soldiers: and Theodosius, after he had dispatched them, stamped that with the inscription, VIRTVTE EXERCITVS, upon the very same account." Surviving examples have a diameter of about 24 mm and a weight of about 4.5 g. Notes: London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho.
