Title
Roman Coins
Description
English: A gold solidus of Valentinian I (RIC IX Antioch 2B), from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of Rutlandshire (now Rutland), sold separately and as Map 25 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The illustration is a reengraving of Figure 22 in Tabula II Nummi Romani from William Camden's Britannia, Vol. I, page 98.

Obverse: VALENTINIANVS P·F· AVG [intending D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, Dominus Noster Valentinianus Pius Felix Augustus, Our Lord the Devout and Fortunate Emperor Valentinian]

Reverse: RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICÆ [intending RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE, Restitutor Reipublicae, Restorer of the Republic] and ANTI [Antiochia, Minted at Antioch, omitted here but present in Camden's illustration]

Camden's note states "22. This coin (stamped at Antioch, as appears by these small letters underneath) was made in honour of Valentinian, after he had reduced Britain from its decaying condition, and called that part he had recovered, from his own name Valentia."

Surviving examples have a diameter of about 21 mm and a weight of about 4.5 g.

Notes: London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho. Bowles, Print and Map-Seller near the Chapter-House in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Bowles Print and Map-Seller over-against Stocks-Market. 1724.
