Title
Roman: Key-ring
Description
English: A copper alloy Roman finger ring with an offset openwork key extension dating to the third or fourth centuries AD. The ring belongs to Guiraud's Type 5b. The hoop is D-shaped in section and broken. The key projection extends from a flat, rectangular bezel. The key projection is approximately 'U' shaped, with square edges rather than rounded ones. It possesses a 'U' shaped cut out.

Rotary-type ring-keys have been recorded from excavations at Colchester and Crummy suggests a date in the third or fourth centuries AD. They are associated with small boxes and caskets of personal possessions rather than doors or cupboards (Crummy 1983, 84-85).
