Summary[edit]

Description Stone sculpture c.1700-1730 of heraldic crest of Rolle family of Stevenstone, Devon. Erected by John Rolle (1679-1730), Library Room, Stevenstone. Blazon: A cubit arm erect vested or charged with a fesse dancettée double cotised azure charged with three bezants in the hand a flint-stone proper. (Vivian, Visitations of Devon, 1895, p.652, amended/corrected). Canting arms: If the concept of "possession" may best be depicted by a grasping grabbing clenched fist, and if that fist may be assumed to belong to a man named "Steven", then this crest shows "Steven's stone". These were the canting arms of the mediaeval possessor of this manor, the de Stevenstone family. The original Anglo-Saxon name of the manor was no doubt nothing to do with stones/rocks, but simply "Steven's ton/tun/town", the very common ending denoting "settlement/manor/estate/farm". The Christian story of the "Stoning of Stephen" associates the name with stones held in fists. The motif was adopted in the 16th century by the Rolle family of Stevenstone, in their crest. The object grasped by the hand later changed, during the Rolle tenure, to "a roll of parchment", or even a baton, as seen in Chittlehampton Church. See also motif of HMS Stevenstone for a further version.
