Summary

[edit]
Description
English: (outdoor public display, Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, Nebraska, USA)

From on-site signage:

Rocky Mountain Bedrock The mountain cores in eastern Wyoming are made mostly of billion-year-old pink granite and associated metamorphic rocks like gneiss. As the mountains rose, they were eroded down by streams, which carried pieces of the mountains east onto the Great Plains.

Some Wyoming rocks are too soft or brittle to survive the 400 mile trip across Nebraska. These common Laramie Range sandstones and limestones break down too rapidly to make good pebbles. Western source gravel in eastern Nebraska therefore contains few pebbles of sedimentary rock.
