Incidentally, and to save confusion, it may be noticed thaton the six-inch ordnance map this is erroneouslycalled Y Gribin, and the ridge of that name is leftunmarked. The real Gribin leads from near Bwlchy Ddwy Glyder down to Ogwen, and, roughlyspeaking, separates the two Glyders, with CwmIdwal on the west and Cwm Bochlwyd on theeast. To return to our climb : it will be noticed thatthe Twisting Gully is the first opening in thecrags east of the Eastern Gully. There is everyprobability of a climbing party failing to findit on a misty day, for its beginning is somedistance above the foot of the crags. However, this would be no great disadvantage, for any ofits neighbouring cracks are of equal or evengreater merit. There is no serious difficulty in any of these, for the rocks are weathered in such a fashionas to afford almost too copious hand- and foot-holds. It may be mentioned that the TwistingGully is of special interest, because near itssummit and to the left there is an extraordinary

CLOGWYN DU GULLY 147 cave. It is awkward to find unless the weatheris clear, but, if possible to do so, its discoveryand exploration will j>rove entertaining. The partywill find it possible to penetrate about seventyor eighty feet into the heart of the mountain, and then make an amusing exit from the cavethrough a hole in its upper reaches. Clogwyn Du Gully. -The crags of the easternface of Glyder Fawr are probably the grandeston the whole mountain. Geologists tell us thatthis great cliff, which is known locally as Clog-wyn Du, differs from the rest of the Glyders inthat it is composed of a mass of intrusive green-stone. Presumably as a result of the action of frostand water, there is nowadays a fine gully runningup near the centre of the face. As a climb itlooks very attractive when seen from the headof the Nameless Cwm, which lies at its foot andis a higher offshoot of Cwm Idwal. My first visit to the gully was just after theEaster of 1899, under wintry conditions. Mr.O. G. Jones
