Han havde nationens største tilhørerskare, og ikke mindst hævede han de højeste honorarer. Han fik salene mere end stuvende fulde, og der var faktisk trafikkaos ved indgangene, som måtte styres af politibetjente. Til tider var der 20.000 tilhørere i lokalerne. He was prominent during the Golden Age of Freethought. Colonel Bob Mountain in Washington state was named after him by the climbers who discovered the peak in 1893.
