Original caption
U.S. Engineer Office photograph showing the Monongahela River from Mt. Washington looking toward downtown Pittsburgh. The bridge is the Wabash Bridge, a two-track railroad bridge for the Wabash-Pittsburgh Terminal Railroad, which opened in 1904 in competition with the near monopoly of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The bridge led to a narrow trainshed just visible on the downtown side of the photograph. It was torn down in 1948, but its tall piers remain on either side of the Monongahela River about 1,650 feet west of the Smithfield Bridge, near Market Street on the Pittsburgh side.
