The Venetians, quick to perceive theadvantages of trading-posts in the East, di-verted their energies to the securing of com-mercial privileges in the ports of Syria andEgypt. Such was the energy of the Republic the rashness to give battle to their fleet, theywon over that monarch a complete and deci-sive victory. It will be remembered that the first armiesof Crusaders marched overland, through Hun-gary, by way of Constantinople, into AsiaMinor. Later on the advantages of the waterroute to the East began to be recognized.Venice became the favored port of debarka-tion. Here, in the year 1202, the warriorsof the Fourth Crusade gathered, preparatoryto embarkation in the Venetian fleet. Hereit was that the Crusaders, unable to pay theeums which themselves had promised as theprice of their transportation to the East, wereinduced, against the angry protests of thePope, to make up the deficiency by joiningthe Venetians in a campaign against the in-surgent people of Dalmatia.
