| Description |
Clement Miege, of the University of Utah, sat with the two radar ice penetrating systems and watched the radar returns on a laptop screen to make sure the instruments functioned properly and were collecting data. The radar sled ships in a box slightly larger than those found in the back of a pickup truck and can be put together by two people in about 3-4 hours. The radars and sled were developed by University of Kansas' Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets The traverse was the first of two field campaigns to study snow accumulation on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and tie the information back to larger-scale data collected from satellites.
