A few minutes later,the geared ■ locomotivethat was pushing emptycars up the steep moun-tain railroad, slowed upfor Fred to climb on aflat-car and then churnedits way on up the grade. Their way led throughsome of the finest scenery in New England. The road twisted and turnedalong the side of a mighty hog-back of solid gran-ite, ever climbing toward the quarry on its top,fifteen hundred feet above the village at its foot. After a half-hours climb they arrived at thequarries, with their towering derricks strung alongthe face of the great hump of granite over half amile long. The stone-crusher stood at one end,at the bottom of a long incline that brought spalls, or broken stone, from the quarry. A der-rick, the mast of which was over a hundred feethigh, stood where it could pass the crushed rockfrom the crusher directly to the cars. What s up, Hod? asked Fred, hopping offhis flat-car as the train slowly steamed past.How many troubles have you got, anyway?
