Title
English: Riders. Portrait of E.I. Myussara and E. Myussar
Description

In 1849, on the advice of doctors, Karl Briullov left St. Petersburg for the island of Madeira, where he stayed for about a year.

  • Among the few of the Russian colony on the island, Briullov met with the Myussars. Evgeny Myussar (c. 1814-1896) was secretary to Duke Maximilian and his wife Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna.
  • In the watercolor portrait Evgeny is shown with his wife Emily Myussar (c. 1823-1902).
  • "It conveys the texture of clothing and accessories — and the equestrian Myussars. The artist loved to create formal riding portraits."
