Rex parade on Canal Street, Mardi Gras, New Orleans, 1930s.

Original caption:

"Rex's glittering pageant navigates Canal Street, the world's widest main business thoroughfare, through a dense sea of eager, merry humanity, seen today at the high tide of emotion. Annually in 20 papier mache floats... a few of which can be seen in this picture. Rex reveals colorful episodes from some popular story, either historic or mythical. Sometimes he depicts famous fans, or flowers or shells. The pageant costs thousands of dollars. Members of the "Krewe of Rex", all male, ride the floats "en masque" portraying various characters in the tale, throwing favors by the hundreds to individuals in the surrounding crowds. It is estimated that on Mardi Gras Day more than 100, 000 human beings pack the 171 feet expanse of Canal Street to take part in the day's revelry, nearly every other one is in some kind of masquerade.
