The wayfaring man may learnfrom the statue of the lady, the shield shebears in one hand, the several smug inscrip-tions, and the immaculate purity of her garb,that she was intended by her creators tostand for the purity of the American metrop-olis, which, in the belief of the Associationfor New York, has been foully slanderedby New Yorks many traducers and particu-larly by the Fusion and other anti-Tammanyforces during the present campaign. The monumentis the work of Ettore Ximenes, director offine arts in the Ministry of Education ofItaly.
