n guests to spend the winter,at least. Since this cartoon wasdrawn, however. Uncle Sam hasshown a very decided dispositionto curtail his stay at Peking ; andfor this let us all be thankful. The smaller cartoon on this pagerelates to a matter about whichnot nearly enough has been said.At the capture of Tientsin by theaflied armies, the soldiers of allnations were permitted to exer-cise the medieval military privi-lege of looting private property.By common consent, for a day ortwo the soldiery of the great na-tions of Christendom, sent toChina to rescue missionaries and uphold a higher civilization, became thieves and plun-derers. Authentic descriptions of the looting of Tien-tsin are enough to provoke a unanimous moral indigna-tion meeting in Sing Sing Prison. Uncle Sam had tojoin Europe in the march to Peking, but he will not beexcusable if he stays very long in that sort of company. We believe it to be true that our soldiers took no lead-ing part in the carnival of plunder at Tientsin.

LAMARTINE said, From the Gracchi toMirabeau and Jefferson, the greatest friendsof the people have sprung up from the ranks ofthe patricians.
