A decided shrinkage inthe Republican majorities of these two NewEngland States would be taken as indicating acorresponding relative Democratic gain through-out the North. The Vermont election occurson September 4, and tliat of Maine on Septem-ber 10. The Hon. W. W. Stickney will un-doubtedly be elected governor of the GreenMountain State, and the Hon. John F. Hill, theRepublican nominee, will be elected governorof Maine. A number of the most prominentRepublicans in the country have been sent toMaine to make speeches. A great deal of news-paper comment was occasioned by the reportedrefusal of tlie Hon. Thomas B. Reed, Mainesmost conspicuous public man, to take a part mthe speaking.
