The doings ofAzev and the influence of the system he rep-resented were set forth in these pages inApril. Despite the evidence Lopukhin wascondemned to five years penal servitude for helping the social revolutionary organiza-tion by revealing Azevs relations with thegovernment. On this extraordinary chargeconviction was made by a court composed ofthe Russian Senate. This judgment was toomuch even for Russian justice, and thehighest officers of the State, cabinet ministers,senators, and other eminent leaders whocrowded the courtroom at the trial, privatel\condemned the verdict.
