In the fifteen yearspreceding annexation the government ofHawaii expended $1,500,000 and the plant-ers association an equal amount in the pro-motion of immigration, but with the amen-ability of the Territory to the laws of theUnited States prohibiting contract labor themovement necessarily ceased. As a result of these measures to supply thedemand for labor we have in Hawaii themost extraordinary^ composition of popula-tion to be found within our borders. Morethan half the people of the islands are Asi-atics, professing some Oriental religion, andless than 5 per cent, of them are nativeAmericans.
