Summary[edit]

Description

Scientists from the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory Scientific Collaboration joined NSF Director France Córdova on Feb. 11, 2016, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to announce the first direct detection of gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of space-time, predicted by Albert Einstein a century ago. The gravitational waves were detected on Sept. 14, 2015, at 5:51 a.m. EDT (09:51 UTC) by twin LIGO detectors located in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington. NSF’s funding of LIGO and the science behind its operation and research began in the 1970s. The LIGO observatories were conceived, built and are operated by Caltech and MIT.
