Summary[edit]

Description
English: PictionID:41567322 - Title:Republic XF-91 Thunderceptor Republic XF-91, 46-681 on display at Edwards Air Force Base, 1950's. The second prototype, 46-681, had an engine failure during takeoff from Edwards AFB in the summer of 1951. Republic test pilot Carl Bellinger escaped from the aircraft just as the tail melted off - total flight time was a mere 90 seconds. By the time fire apparatus arrived, driving seven miles across the dry lake bed, the tail section had been reduced to ashes. 46-681 was then fitted with a V or butterfly tail, and was flight-tested with this configuration. - Catalog:15_002949 - Filename:15_002949.TIF - Image from the Charles Daniels Photo Collection album "Seversky, Republic and P-47"----PLEASE TAG this image with any information you know about it, so that we can permanently store this data with the original image file in our Digital Asset Management System.----SOURCE INSTITUTION: San Diego Air and Space Museum Archive
