Then a sort of battle commences betweenthe serpent and the charmer; the latter, striking up a monotonoussort of song, opposes his closed fist to his enemy, sometimes usinghis right hand and sometimes his left (Plate I.) The animal fixesits eyes upon the list which threatens it,, follows all its movements, 70 REPTILES AND BIRDS. balances its head and body, and thus simulates a kind of dance.Other charmers induce the Cobra to make a variety of movementsof the neck and head by playing upon a whistle or flute. It issaid that these mysterious jugglers are able, by some sympatheticaction they possess, to plunge these dangerous enemies into a sort oflethargy and death-like rigidity, and to bring them at will out of thismomentar
