iss BlancheWebb, who was appointed as an associate missionary. Mr. andMrs. Lee returned late in the year to Korea with the expec-tation of joining Mr. Moffett in opening the new station atPyeng Yang. Some difficulty was experienced in the early partof the year in making a settlement in this place, owing to thepersistent refusal of authorities to allow any sale of property toforeigners. No violence, however, was shown to the mission-aries, either of the Presbyterian or of the Methodist Board, andthe general treatment received from the people was courteous,while at the same time there seemed to be a general apprecia-tion of the benevolent ard useful character of their work.Pyeng Yang is not as yet a treaty port, but as it is located neara navigable river, but a few miles from its mouth, it is expectedthat the place will soon be open to foreign intercourse, and thatit may become available as a promising missionary station. The year has notbeen one of marked success in any direction. It is yet the dayof small things. Jealousy of foreigners still continues to agreater or less extent, and early in the year a riot was threat-ened in the regions lying southward of Seoul, but no violencehas been offered. Between the different missionaries of theNorthern and Southern Presbyterian Churches of America, andthe Presbyterian Church of Australia there has been a spirit ofharmony and co-operation.
