Description
English:

An orchard of young, leafless trees stands in a level area of turf beside a paved pathway. A two-story red structure and row of trees are in the background.

The cultural landscape at Lawnfield represents the Transition Period (1886-1899), associated with the farm of James Garfield. During this time, the main residence became more isolated from the agrarian buildings and the spatial relationships changed so that two sectors of the landscape began to develop. James A. Garfield had orchards planted on the property and improved the orchards that pre-existed his presence. The orchards associated with Garfield consisted of pears, cherries, apples, and peaches. Following the guidance of the Cultural Landscape Report, an orchard consisting of peach and apple trees was planted in the northwest corner of the property. The replanted orchard conveys an important aspect of the site's agricultural history during Garfield’s time and contributes to the integrity of the site.
