Summary[edit]

Description

French WW1 Light Tank Built 1917 to 1918 Total production:- 4,500 (appx) Main Armament:- 37mm Puteaux SA 1918 gun The Renault FT was the first production tank to have its armament fitted in a fully rotating turret and is therefore considered to be the world’s first modern tank. Roughly 4,500 were produced and it went on to serve with 27 countries until 1949. During WW1 a production line was set up in the United States and 950 of what was known as the M1917 were produced. Too late to see action in WW1, some of these were eventually used for training by Canada during WW2. The Renault FT fought in WW1, the Russian Civil War, the Polish-Soviet War, the Chinese Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War, WW2, the Franco-Thai War, the Turkish War of Independence and finally by Egypt in the 1948 Arab – Israeli War. Two were recently found in Afghanistan and were in such good condition that one is now in running order in Poland. This example has a Girod cast turret and is on display in what is best known as Hall 5 of the Kubinka Tank Museum, although its official title is now Pavilion 5 in Area 2 of the Park Patriot museum. Kubinka, Moscow Oblast, Russia.
