Summary[edit]

Description Close-up of the west counterweight of the Steel Bridge, in Portland, Oregon, in its normal position – fully raised within the west lift-span tower. Clearly visible are remnants of the Union Pacific Railroad shield, mostly worn off by many years of exposure to the elements. Completed in 1912, the bridge is owned by Union Pacific. Until 1996, it was half owned by Southern Pacific, but UP acquired SP in that year, making the Steel Bridge fully UP-owned. Originally, it was half owned by SP and half by the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Company (a UP subsidiary), and one counterweight carried an SP logo, the other an OWR&N logo.
