Text Appearing Before Image:
d a lawsuit to defend we re-tained him, though we didnt think hewas much of a lawyer. We had a Chester White hog. Thatwas when the Chester Whites werescarce and valuable. In time a brood of seven little pigswere born. We let them run aroundloose, and one night one little pig waslost. We searched everywhere for it,but could not find it. About a month later my husbandfound the pig, running in the roadtoward our house. He picked it up andtook it back home, as he identified itby a notch in its ear—the same rnaikwe had on the ears of all the new pigs. The next day a prominent familynear us claimed the pig. They swore itwas their pig, but we found they keptthe pig hidden in the woods. When we refused to give them ourpig they brought suit against us. Then we engaged Lincoln. Theyclaimed the pig was worth only 50cents. We said it was worth $2.50. Feeling ran high in the neighbor-hood and a feud almost started. Finallythe case came to trial. Lincoln distin-guished himself by winning the case.

MRS. SINA WILBERN. His fee from us was $2 and I guesshe needed it. 1 But his victory gave him muchjrorninence in the town. It was one ofhe first victories he won In court inwhich the public were much Inter-ested. Mrs. Wilbern learned much aboutLincolns boyhood from her husband. She also knew him for several yearsat New Salem, Her recollections ofthis period are remarkably clear andshe has many a good story to tell. She said: My husband and Lincoln while atschool played and wrestled together.Neither had much schooling andneither liked to get what schooling theyhad. Lincoln was not as studious assome people have said. Wrestling was* a great hobby andsport of Lincoln. A negro namedTate was the only boy who couldthrow him. Lincoln was not so awfully brightat school and liked to play hookey,: guess. He and my husband oftenskipped school and went fishing orluntlng out in the woods. Nobody thought much of Lincoln •vhen I first met him. that is as a>right fellow, but every one liked him.reminiscencesabowilinc
