Summary[edit]
DescriptionReliquary of st. Stanislaus, Church Heritage Museum in Vilnius01(js).jpg |
English: The Reliquary of st. Stanislaus. Central Europe, Vilnius (?), - 1500–03.The earliest surviving reliquary in Lithuania belongs to the type of so-called “talking” reliquaries. Its form refers to the relic contained inside – part of the forearm bone of the Bishop of Krakow St. Stanislaus. According to a tradition unconfirmed by documents, a small part of the saint’s remains was given to the Vilnius Cathedral on the occasion of its consecration by the chapter of the Krakow Cathedral in 1388. However, the reliquary that contains the remains is at least one century older and typical of the Gothic period of the late 15th-early 16th c.
Polski: Relikwiarz św. Stanisława. Europa Środkowa, Wilno(?), 1500-1503. Zbiory Muzeum Dziedzictwa Sakralnego w Wilnie. |
