| Description |
It had been a hot day! We waited until after sunset for these birds to land. The flock had set up a lookout bird on three trees in a triangular formation around the pond. A fly-pass by another bird gave the "all clear" call. Young birds came in first, landing on a mound away from the water. After a time, more birds landed and then walked to the water edge carefully while watching us all the time. We were sitting under a tree hardly breathing, blinking or moving while experiencing this awesome spectacle! After a while the birds took fright and flew off together! The males have the bright red tails, the females have red with yellow and black bands. 6 of 6 photos April 2014 |
