At the Real Alcázar in Seville. The Alcázar of Seville (Spanish "Reales Alcázares de Sevilla" or "Royal Alcazars of Seville", Spanish pronunciation: [alˈkaθar])) is a royal palace in Seville, Spain, originally a Moorish fort. It is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe, and it was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the Seville Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. The Almohades were the first to build a palace, which was called Al-Muwarak, on the site of the modern day Alcázar. The palace is one of the best remaining examples of mudéjar architecture. Subsequent monarchs have added their own additions to the Alcázar. The upper levels of the Alcázar are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence and are administered by the Patrimonio Nacional.
Jardines del Marqués de la Vega-Inclán Marchena Door (Puerta de Marchena) The Marchena Door is the former front of the dukes of Arcos' palace, and since the eighteenth century property of the Dule of Osuna, was erected during the reign of Isabella I of Castile, with Gothic decoration and with subsequent Renaissance elements with many heraldic motifs. In its composition we see mudejar traits. Its authorship could be linked to the production of the artist Juan Guas, both for stylistic reasons as well as for the relationship of this architect with the owners of the palace. It was constructed in 1492 and reformed in 1540. The reform affected to the heraldic elements that marked the change of lineage produced in the lordship. It was added to the front figures of wild people carrying shields with heraldic arms pointing the new lineage. The author of the sculptures is Esteban Jamete, and they can be dated in 1544. It should be noted that the villa of Marchena is one of the most important in the Low Andalusia. The Marquis de la Vega Inclan purchased on behalf of King Alfonso XIII the above front to place it in the new gardens of the Royal Alcazar in Seville. |
