Summary[edit]

Description

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) joined Discover Magazine, IEEE-USA and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on April 25, 2012, in hosting a briefing on Capitol Hill on how innovations in urban water infrastructure design will help conserve energy and protect potable water resources. NSF Deputy Director Cora Marrett chatted briefly with the majority leader as an audience of more than 100 guests took their seats. The briefing was moderated by Tom Peterson, NSF assistant director for engineering. Reid spoke about how climate change, energy use and urban infrastructure are interconnected. Richard Luthy, director of ReNUWIt (an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center), noted many potential benefits from advancements in wastewater treatment technologies. Patricia Mulroy, general manager of the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Southern Nevada Water Authority, said water availability, particularly in the West, is likely to be among the next national crises, if we are not proactive in the use and management of water.
