Ray Benich auditions female back up singers (that can skate), for Roller Jam, Venice California 1979

Summary[edit]

Description
English: January 1979 / Holding auditions for female back up singers for the worlds first rock n' roll band on roller skates, Roller Jam. As seen in this photo, my second wife Sarah got the spot.

Once we had our act together and could actually play, sing and skate both forward and backwards, we placed an ad in the west coast trade paper the Daily Variety. It simply said:

Roller Jam performs original hard rock on roller skates, seeks management.

The very first call to come in at 9:am the first day of the ad was from Moonlight Productions in Century City, they said:

"We're not managers, however we are in the process of casting a movie about roller skating and are interested in seeing you guys perform".

Director Robert Greenwald who had directed Xanadu staring Olivia Newton John, in what turned out to be a rather boring movie, was set to direct Roller Boogie, staring Linda Blaire. We were absolutely ebullient, bubbling over with high hopes. Mostly because the freakin' cost of living in LA, both then and now, has always been ridiculously high. We had a five year old son and could use a break... ...so we went for it.

Academy award winning director Robert Greenwald came out to our studio, (as seen above) to see us. As it turned out, the bottom line was, as his secretary explained to me:

"We would like to include the band in the movie, with a speaking part for your wife Sarah". "If she would agree to come to a cast party and "entertain" the gentlemen"?

That night we went back to our cheap ass apartment in Santa Monica, got drunk and toked, and mad as hell. The reality of how Hollywood really worked set in. Yeah I had read about how it's been said that: "Marylin Monroe spent more time on her knees than in front of a camera", and all those "casting couch" stories. But WHAT THE FUCK..! We were giving them something that has never been done. Now how often does that happen? And that's not enough for them? Fuck em..! It didn't mean that much to either one of us, that we would agree to go to that length. I personally know people who would have jumped at that opportunity, and not thought twice about it. Maybe that's why they're huge rock stars today...
