| Description |
Rawtenstall signal box located alongside the Up & Down Irwell Vale line by New Hall Hey Road level crossing. Thursday 18th September 2008 Rawtenstall West signal box was a British Railways London Midland Region Type 15 design fitted with a 20 lever Railway Executive Committee frame which opened in December 1957 replacing an 1878-built Saxby and Farmer Type 9 design signal box. It was renamed Rawtenstall, probably on 4th December 1966 when Rawtenstall East signal box was closed, and was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only on 4th June 1972. The box along with the single line from Heywood was closed on 5th December 1980 and eventually ownership passed to the East Lancashire Railway who reopened it as a non block post with no operational signalling on 29th March 1991 The box carries a British Railways London Midland Region maroon enamel nameplate from the days when it was named Rawtenstall West |
