r as ; it is still original, from ^he sixth century. i There we see in themidst a vast Cross en-closed in a great circle. In the midst of theCross is the head of theSaviour of the world.Above in the heavensthe hand of the EternalFather points down-wards to the Cross be-neath and upon eitherside kneel Moses andElias. Beneath thisgreat Cross, his handsuplifted as though hewere calling us to prayerwith the words Dominusvobiscum, stands S. Apol-linaris ^(vested in alband chasubtepthe-Ralr^.^hum about his shoulders.~^^rowards him in the midst,on either side, six sheep seem to move among the flowersand trees and stones of a wood, in the background ofwhich are three other sheep, two on one side and one on theother. According to Crowe and Cavalcaselle the space inwhich S. ApoUinaris stands is divided into three courses, thefirst containing a Christian flock of twelve sheep, the secondrocks and trees, and the third three sheep symbolisingApostles, separated from each other by trees. As it seems
Text Appearing After Image:
Capital from S. Vitale 2o8 RAVENNA to me, these three sheep belong rather to the upper part ofthe mosaic which, with the Cross in the midst, bearing theface of Our Lord, and on either side Moses and Elias, symbolisesthe Transfiguration. These three sheep would thus representS. Peter, S. James and S. John. Beneath between the windows we see represented fourBishops of Ravenna, S. Ursinus, S. Ursus, S. Severus, andS. Ecclesius. To the right are the sacrifices of Abel, Mel-chizedek, and Abraham. To the left the privileges of thechurch of Ravenna. In the midst we see an archbishop andthe emperor who hands him a scroll on which is writtenprivilegia. To the left are three priests bearing fire, incense, and a thurible. To the right are three other figures supportingthe emperor as the three priests support the archbishop.Doubtless this mosaic records the privileges granted to thechurch of Ravenna by Constantinople. The archbishop isprobably Reparatus who received so much from the EmperorConstan
