| Description |
English: 'Hall' and 'Castle' 4-6-0s on an Up express descending Rattery Bank. View westward east of Tigley Box, towards Plymouth; ex-GWR Exeter etc. - Plymouth - Penzance main line. This is another scene on the infamous Saturday of 27 July 1957 (cf.SX7760 : Manchester - Penzance express ascending Rattery Bank near Tigley and SX7760 : Double-headed Bristol - Penzance express on Rattery Bank), but this was an UP train descending the Bank, on time: the 08.20 Penzance to Paddington, headed by No. 4931 'Hanbury Hall' (built 6/29, withdrawn 7/62) piloting 'Castle' No. 5045 'Earl of Dudley' (built 3/36 as 'Bridgwater Castle', renamed 9/37, withdrawn 9/62). They have already surmounted the 2½ miles at 1-in-42 of Hemerdon Bank and have only the 1½ miles at c. 1-in-42/65 of the south side of Dainton before the pilot will come off at Newton Abbot. The train will arrive at Paddington at 17.15 - with luck. |
