Contraindications. —Irrigation of the bladder must gener-ally be avoided in acute cystitis until after the extreme sensi-tiveness of the mucous membrane has to some degree sub-sided. Irrigation can generally be undertaken if special careis employed within two or three days after the onset of thedisease. Most relief will be obtained in the early stages ofcystitis by external applications, such as the hot pelvic or hipand leg pack or the very hot sitz (iio-^ to 120°) for 5 or 10minutes, followed by a very gentle affusion at So^. Special care must be taken to avoid the baneful effect ofcold in cases of either acute or chronic cystitis. Chilling ofthe patient during the treatment may produce an acute exac-erbation of the inflammation, and greatly aggravate all thesymptoms. Special care must be taken to keep the feet warm during the application, and there should be as little exposure as possible. The limbs should be wrapped in flannel blankets, and the patient should on no account be allowed to feel the slightest sensation of chilliness. Irrigation of the bladder must be avoided in cases of acute urethritis, in consequence of the danger of conveying the infection backward into the bladder and other of the deep passages.
