Text Appearing Before Image:
when followedby some vigorous cold application, as the cold bath, possessesa hygienic value which can not be overestimated. A local application of the electric light for 15 or 20 min-utes, followed by an application of an ice compress or icefriction for 5 to 8 seconds, is almost a panacea for the painof sciatica and for similar painful affections in which thereis no inflammatory action. The electric-light bath has been found superior to allother means for applying heat to circumscribed areas of thesurface; and by the use of a number of simple appliances it isfar more convenient in its application than the fomentation, hot bags, or any similar appliance (Figs. 135-138). M. Below, who has for some time employed the electric-light bath constructed after the authors plan, reported in apaper read before the medical society of Berlin in 1898, aconsiderable number of cases in which the bath had beensuccessfully used in the treatment of rheumatism, syphilis, and various other morbid conditions.
