e sudden inrush of bloodfrom the surface causes an intense congestion of all theinternal viscera, a fact which should never be forgotten,as it renders this bath inapplicable in quite a large numberof cases. The effect of the bath is at first a slight elevation of theinternal temperature in consequence of the sudden checkingof heat elimination. After reaction occurs, there is a slightfalling of the temperature, but respiration, lieart action, andall the vital functions are quickened by the profound nervousimpression made. The blood pressure is raised, the circula-tion of the brain is stimulated, respiratory movements producevigorous fluxion of the blood and lymph through the cere-brum, so that the mind, if previously clouded, becomes clear, and all the intellectual functions are facilitated. The suddencontact of cold water with the general surface likewise stimu-lates the action of the kidneys and the liver, excites peristal-sis, causes contraction of the hollow viscera, and arouses all

Therapeutic Applications.— The cold immersion bath is 1110especially indicated in cases requiring powerful stimulation ofmetabolism, and especially in the class of cases designated byBouchard under the general term slowed nutrition, in dia-betes without emaciation, in obesity, and for persons in ordi-nary health, requiring simply vigorous recuperative measuresto repair the damages arising from sedentary employment andlack of exercise. The plunge bath is useful in cases in whichthe cold douche can not be employed in consequence of itspercutient effects. It is a much more vigorous applicationthan the half bath, producing very powerful refrigeranteffects, with correspondingly strong thermic reaction andmetabolic changes. It may be properly used after any sweat-ing procedure, as the sweating pack, the electric-light bath, the vapor, the Tur
