| Description |
Icebergs that contain no internal air bubbles, but mainly consist of clear ice, appear blue or turquoise (green shades are created by microorganisms). When red light with long wavelengths enters the ice, it is absorbed, rather than reflected. The light transmitted or refracted through the ice returns as blue or blue-green. Fjallsárlón ist a glacier lagoon in Iceland, located at the southern end of Vatnajökull, Europes largest glacier. A tongue of this glacier, called Fjallsjökull, crawls down into the lagoon, where icebergs break off and drift across the lake. Zodiac boats allow tourists to get very close to these drifting icebergs. We have been told that an iceberg consisting of clear blue-green ice is a rather rare sight. We had bad weather, but I think this rather added to the intensity of the colors. |
