The growth of Chicago has, throughout, been coincident withthe development and prosperity of the Western States and Terri-tories; of IlHnois and Iowa especially it may be said to havegrown with their growth and strengthened with their strength.Young as is Chicago, it was not until after its incorporation as acity that what is now the great State of Iowa received even a ter-ritorial organization; while it was only in 1818 that Illinois, nowleading all the other States in cereal productions and mileage ofrailroads, and even ranking fourth in manufactures, was admittedinto the Union, with a population of about 30,000, mainly settledin the southern part of the State. The Fort Dearborn Massacre occurred August 15, 1812, ata spot near Eighteenth Street and Indiana Avenue, which is pro-posed to be marked by an appropriate monument, shortly to beerected by Mr. G. M. Pullman. Capt. Wells, several other officers and their wives, some Scale 220 Yards to one Inch.
