Dr. Horatio Stones statue of John Hancock stands at thefoot of this staircase. It was sculptured in 1861, and boughtfor $5,500. On the wall of the landing is the large painting,by Walker, of the Storming of Chapultepec (captured byScotts amiy on September 13, 1847, during the Mexican War),for which $6,000 was paid. At the head of the stairway hangsa full-length portrait of Washington, by Charles Wilson Peale,painted in 1779, the first sittings for which were given at ValleyForge. This west corridor admits one to the gentlemens, and toone of the reserved, galleries of the Senate, and to numerouscommittee-rooms. Beyond the stairway in the south corridorare two of the most interesting rooms in the building, a halllooking out upon the plaza, and another, adjoining, having adelightful prospect northward. These rooms not only containfine tiHng and mural decorations, but some notable paintings.In the former are a portrait of John C. Calhoun, and Morans RAND M c N A L L Y WASHINGTON GUIDE 175

Franzonis Clock Statuary Hall, The Capitol Page 159 celebrated pictures of the canons ofthe Colorado and of the Yellow-stone, which were painted fromactual studies, and sold to theGovernment for $10,000 each. Thisroom opens into the gallery forSenators families, the first and sec-ond seats of which are reserved forthe President and Vice-President,and their friends. The adjoining hall (from whichopens a ladies retiring-room, with awoman attendant) has the paintingrepresenting the encounter betweenthe Monitor and Merrimac byHalsall, and purchased in 1877 for$15,000, the only exception to therule that no reminder of the Civil War shall be placed in theCapitol, an exception due to the fact that this was in realitya drawn battle, where the courage of the contestants was con-spicuously equal, and where the naval methods of the worldwere revolutionized. Its historical interest is therefore, worldwide. Here also are portraits of Lincoln and Garfield, inItalian mosaic, the gift of Signor Anton
