with hanging gardens, now butscantily cultivated. We found the old citadel, the Alkazaba. occupiedby hundreds of families, numerous as crows, and nearly all as fam-ished. In its ruins they had walled off for themselves little dens androokeries, and here dwelt, looking out upon magnificent prospectsover sea and land, but with filth and squalor all around. A little way to the•eastward is another mount, captured and held by the Marquis of CADIZ, GIBRALTAR, AND MALAGA, 207 Cadiz, Rodrigo Ponce de Leon, around which the stormy battle fiercely raged. Above the battlements rises a tower, which must be the same inwhich El Zegri held his mysterious consultation with the astrologer;

A SKETCH IN MALAGA. and the covered way connecting castle and citadel (though no longercovered) may still be traced up the winding crest of the hill. Theonly other relic of the Moor that is prominent is a great arch erectedat the entrance to the market-place. Our only chance companionon the hill, as we surveyed the fort, was a boy, who lay flat upon the 208 RAMBLES IN SUNNY SPAIN. ground all the while. Upon coming up to him we found that he wasengaged in trapping birds; he had half a dozen cages arranged arounda bare spot on the hillside, and strings leading from them and thesnare he had spread, so that by pulling them he could cause the birdsinside to flutter, and when strange birds had settled on his trap, hecould also pull other strings and net them. Leaving our young bird-catcher to his pastime, we meandered back to the city and engagedseats in the train for Granada.
