It was not only a district near the Foium, but a prison, as the namesignifies, made out of stone quarries. It is first mentioned (b.c. 212)by Livy (xxvi. 27) in his account of the fire. Livy (xxxii. 26; xxxvii. 3)says it was a place for the custody of hostages and prisoners of war.When Q. M. Celer the cousitI was imprisoned there by the tribuneL. FLivius, Celer attempted to assemble the Senate in it (DionCassius, xxxvii. 50); so we may infer that it was a large build-ing. The Lavytumice was entirely distinct from the MamertinePrison. Ticc church with the plain front, S. Adriano, and the house vnth thegreen, shutters, occupy the site of THE SENATE HOUSE,originally built by TuUus Hostilius one hundred years after thefoundation of Rome, and called the Cui-ia Hostilia. He built aSenate House, which retained the name Hostilia even within thememory of our fathers (Livy, i. 30).

24 KAMBLE I. It was destroyed by fire when the body of tlie tribune Clodins wasburned, a.u.c. 702. Rebuilt by Faustus, the son of Sylla. Destroyeda second time, to do away with the name of Sylla, on pretence oferecting the Temple of Felicity ; rebuilt by Julius Ctesar, A.u.c. 711,completed by the Triumvirs, and consecrated by Augustus, whonamed it the Curia Julia. Again destroyed by fire under Titus, andrebuilt by Domitian, and called Senatus. It w;us approached by a flight of steps; for Tarquin carried oldServius out of the Curia, and threw him down the steps to thebottom (Livy, i. 48). This was the proper Senate House ; and when we read •of thesenators meeting in other places, there was always some specialreason for their so doing. The tradition of the church, S.
