Hehad anointed them with clay and spittle, is thoughtto be one of two which stand at the foot of MountOphel, at the junction of the Tyropeon, or Cheese-mongers Valley, and the Kidron. There is an immenseruined pool at the north of the Haram area, whichhas been supposed to be the Pool of Bethesda, theHouse of Mercy, but there are no grounds for theconclusion. It is near the Stephen Gate, just withinthe wall of the city. We are told of Bethesda thatit was by the sheep-gate (or market), and that it hadfive porches.2 Another pool claiming to be Bethesdais shown in the grounds of the church of St. Anne, alsoclose to the Stephen Gate. Bethany is a half-hours walk round the southernshoulder of Olivet, just about two miles from Jerusalem ;which agrees with the statement, Now Bethany wasnigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off. 8 It isone of the most interesting villages on earth. It is asmall village to-day, and never seems to have been 1 2 Chron. xxxii. 30. 2 John v. 2 3 John xi. 18.

Here, in the house of Mary andMartha and their brother Lazarus, the Lord Jesusappears to have found a happy and congenial resting-place on those occasions when He came up toJerusalem; and we are specially told that-He lovedthis family.1 It was only a peasant hut, like thesehuts one sees to-day ; but then the God-man, the manChrist Jesus, on earth was Himself, from first to last,only a Fellahh, or peasant. Born in the village ofBethlehem, at two years of age He was taken to Nazareth,and lived there as boy and man for twenty-eight years,till He entered on His prophetic ministry, when Hewas thirty. Then, driven out of Nazareth, He chosea new home, again a village, Capernaum. As far aswe can learn from the Gospels, the Saviour never slepta night in a town. All that earth ever saw in Himwas the life of a humble peasant. How few seem torealize this ! How deep and wonderful a lesson ofhumil
