September 2004

In the epic Ramayana, (500-300 B.C.) King Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, must undergo the hardships of exile for thirteen years with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. The text describes peaceful days in the forest during which they roam about in search of food, and chance upon sages and ascetics with whom they engage in conversation. In this folio, Rama's wife Sita-an incarnation of the great goddess-personifies the virtues of an ideal wife. Wearing the bark-and-leaf clothing of ascetics, she performs her usual domestic tasks with patience and love. The trailing vine, with its delicate white flowers, is a metaphor of her affection for her husband and a convention of Kangra painting of this period.
