| Description |
English: Cle Elum is located at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, on the Yakima and Cle Elum rivers. Settlers arrived in the area in 1870, and the town was platted in 1886. The original name, Tle-el-Lum, was changed to Clealum by the Northern Pacific Railroad, and later became Cle Elum. The town, and its near neighbor Roslyn, grew up around the local coal mines. Cle Elum's lumber mills cut the timbers needed by both the mines and the railroad.
This 1880s photo shows the railroad depot at Cle Elum. People wait by the tracks watching a steam locomotive. The wooden structure to the left is a water tank which stores water needed by the steam engine.
